English BHV training for international teams: from digital course book to practical exercises
What do you do when a colleague becomes unwell, a fire breaks out or a building needs to be evacuated? In the first minutes of an incident, employees need to know how to respond. For international teams, that starts with instructions they can understand. ARBO centrum combines English-language learning materials with practical BHV training in English, available at your own workplace.
Emergency response starts with clear instructions
Under Dutch law, employers must organise company emergency response, known as bedrijfshulpverlening or BHV, and appoint one or more emergency response officers. The number needed depends on factors such as the size of the organisation and the risks identified in its risk assessment, known in the Netherlands as the RI&E. Cover during different shifts, holidays and absences also matters.
In an international team, language is part of that preparation. Emergency response officers need to understand safety instructions, communicate with colleagues and know what to do when an incident occurs. English-language learning materials help employees prepare for that role.
Digital BHV course books since 2026
Since 2026, ARBO centrum has provided its course books digitally as e-books. This supports our aim to use materials more consciously and reduce the need for printed books.
The English BHV e-book allows participants to study the theory at their own pace and revisit it later. Topics include assessing an emergency, raising the alarm, first aid, CPR, fire response and evacuation. The book supports preparation; participants practise the skills during their training.
What do participants learn during BHV training?
A company emergency response officer helps during an incident and provides assistance until the professional emergency services take over. During the BHV course in English, participants cover both theory and practical skills in English. They practise how to:
- recognise an emergency and assess the situation;
- alert the emergency services and communicate clearly;
- provide first aid and perform CPR using an AED;
- respond safely to an early-stage fire;
- assist with an evacuation and work with other emergency response officers.
Practical exercises help participants apply what they have learned when it matters.
English BHV training at your workplace
Do you want to train several English-speaking employees together? A BHV course at your own workplace can be a practical option. Employees can train as a team without travelling to an external training centre, while practising in a familiar environment.
On-site training allows the exercises to reflect your organisation. Relevant details may include the layout of your building, escape routes, assembly points, available emergency equipment and risks identified in your RI&E. This helps participants understand what their BHV role means in their own workplace.
The training date can also be agreed with your team’s schedule and operations in mind, which is especially useful for organisations with multiple departments or shifts.
➕ What if a participant cannot attend?
If one of your participants is unexpectedly unable to attend the group training, they can make up the course at one of more than 20 ARBO centrum training locations across the Netherlands. This allows the employee to complete their BHV training without having to reschedule the entire group.
Who is this training for?
English-language BHV training at your workplace is particularly useful for international offices, manufacturing companies, logistics operations and other teams where English is the working language. Training together also gives colleagues an opportunity to agree on how they will communicate during an incident: who raises the alarm, who assists with the evacuation and how are other people in the building informed?
Only need to train one or two English-speaking employees? They can join a scheduled BHV course in English at an ARBO centrum location.
